The Medical Imaging Training Immersive Environment (MITIE) system is a 3D VR environment that allows students to manipulate a patient and radiography equipment in order to produce a real-time generated image for comparison with a gold standard. As with VR initiatives in other health disciplines the software mimics clinical practice as much as possible and uses stereo immersive display technology to enhance immersion and realism.

The software was developed in close collaboration with Medical Imaging academics at a provider University with funding from a Health Workforce Australia “Simulated Learning Environments” grant.
The X-Ray Module was delivered in March 2013 on time and passed testing. The simulation environment is now in use as part of the curriculum for radiography students at Queensland University of Technology and will soon be rolled out by Health Workforce Australia  to other educational institutions around the country.
